St. Augustine is a wide blade grass with a beautiful dark green color, soft texture, and thick growth. It is the most popular turf grass and used in warmer regions around the world. Saint Augustine is known for its ability to adapt to multiple growing environments and withstand moderate foot traffic.

It is mainly found in tropical and sub-tropical areas along the Gulf Coast, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean. St. Augustine spreads by stolons and forms a dense layer that crowds out weeds in the lawn and turf.

St. Augustine sod is great for both home and commercial properties and is often used in shady locations. Cut fresh from the farm, delivered to your property.

All four grasses we deliver, including St. Augustine, are matched to South Louisiana's heavy clay soils, USDA hardiness zone 9a, and the long humid Gulf Coast summers.

Is St. Augustine right for your Acadiana yard?

Pick St. Augustine if you have:

  • A yard with moderate to heavy shade from oaks, pines, or buildings
  • Moderate foot traffic (family, not athletic)
  • Willingness to water during dry stretches and fertilize 2 to 3 times a year
  • Preference for dense, dark green ground cover

Pick a different grass if you have:

  • Full sun all day with heavy traffic (go Bermuda)
  • Family yard with kids or dogs (go Zoysia)
  • Low maintenance rural acreage (go Centipede)

April through September is peak. Year round install works in our USDA zone 9a climate, but warm-soil months establish fastest.

Twice a day for the first 7 days, then taper. After week 2, normal weekly watering. Never let it dry completely in the first month.

Yes, as long as you can keep up on watering. Full sun St. Augustine needs more water than shaded St. Augustine. Bermuda or Zoysia may be an easier pick for bright open yards.
