Centipede grass sod is a low, slow-growing, medium-textured, drought tolerant warm season grass that produces a dense, attractive turf. Centipede grows to 3.5 inches and has a light to medium green color. It does best in sunny areas but can tolerate moderate shade. Centipede is a good choice for drought resistance and requires less fertilization and water than many other grass types.

Centipede grass sod is great for both home and commercial properties and is often used at new construction homes and on rural Acadiana acreage. Centipede has a soft texture, but does not have great wear tolerance and does not do well with heavy foot traffic.

All four grasses we deliver, including Centipede, are matched to South Louisiana's heavy clay soils, USDA hardiness zone 9a, and the long humid Gulf Coast summers.

Is Centipede right for your Acadiana yard?

Pick Centipede if you have:

  • A larger rural lot or acreage where you want fewer mowings
  • Sandy or acidic loam soil typical of rural Acadiana
  • Full sun yard with light to moderate foot traffic
  • Preference for low fertilizer and watering input

Pick a different grass if you have:

Centipede cultivars we carry.

Cultivar 01

Common Centipede

The standard cultivar. Light green color, slow growth, low maintenance. Most common across Acadiana rural acreage.

Cultivar 02

TifBlair Centipede

Cold tolerant cultivar with improved color. Better for the occasional hard freeze in the upper Acadiana parishes.

Compare the other three grasses.

Common Centipede questions.

Yes. Centipede is the lower-maintenance pick on larger rural acreages. Slower growth means fewer mowings, and it tolerates the sandy or acidic loam common out there better than the other three.

Measure length times width in feet. Divide by 450 to get the number of pallets. One pallet covers approximately 450 square feet.

April through September is peak. Centipede establishes best in warm soil.

Every 10 to 14 days at 1.5 to 2 inches once established. Less frequent than St. Augustine, Zoysia, or Bermuda.

Not well. Centipede has poor wear tolerance. Family yards with kids and dogs are a better fit for Zoysia or Bermuda.
